This report explores the historical context of the region in order to better understand the issues facing women living in East Jerusalem today. The relevance of this endeavour is two fold: first, by understanding the past the reader may obtain a clearer picture of what is happening today, and why; and secondly, by reviewing some of the unjust decisions of the past, we may gain a better understanding of what needs to be done in order to reach a satisfactory solution. This historical overview is juxtaposed with the voices of real women living in Jerusalem today, who have experienced the events first-hand and who are in a unique position to add texture and substance to events and decisions that frequently took place far from Palestine.
